Data collection can be started by collecting client data every time they connect with your organization, whether it's over the phone or via online chat with customer care, in-store with a salesperson, or via an online survey or contest. It's worth noting, though, that the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 makes it illegal to obtain email addresses from some online sources, such as blogs and internet chat rooms, without the users' and owners' permission.

The first step in protecting your clients' data is to encrypt it. Names, email and physical addresses, credit card numbers, spending histories, social network logins, and any other sensitive information you have access to are all included. You might want to consider hiring a data security expert to do the job for you. If you use a third party to collect and keep your consumer data, be sure they use the most up-to-date encryption standards. Data encryption best practices differ from one industry to the next.
